Help with your theory test

Theory testThe theory test is an important part of learning to drive and passing your test. You can take your theory test before you start your driving lessons, but in general it is recommended to learn for the theory alongside your driving lessons. Then if you come up with things you don’t understand, you can ask your Instructor. In addition, your Instructor will give you loads of information on your lessons which is relevant to the theory test. You do however have to pass your theory test before you can apply for your practical test.

The theory test consists of 50 multiple choice questions, drawn from a question bank of over 900 questions. The test is undertaken at a dedicated theory test centre – your Instructor will be able to advise you of the nearest centre to where you live. The test is done on a touch screen computer and the pass mark is 43 out of 50 or 86%.

Hazard Perception

The Hazard Perception Test is part of the Theory Test. When you have completed the question element, the hazard perception part of the test begins. The test consists of 14 clips of film. Each clip lasts 20-40 seconds, and all but one contain just one scoring hazard. One clip of film has two scoring hazards – just to keep you on your toes! Your Instructor can give you help with understanding what type of hazards you need to identify. The pass mark is 44 out of a possible 75.

It is important to remember that you must pass both parts of the theory test at the same time. So it is no good concentrating on one part and ignoring the other – fail one part means you fail them both. If you feel you need extra help with your theory test then please feel free to ask your driving instructor.
